The Kuntsi Museum of Modern Art arranges a plant workshop aimed at immigrants from May 19th until May 21st.The workshop is hosted by Kalle Hamm and Dzamil Kamanger, whose exhibition “To the ends of the World" (Maan ääriin) opens at Kuntsi on September 29th. Some of the material produced in the workshop will be included in the exhibition.
In the workshop we will list and draw plants growing in the Vaasa area, which the immigrants are familiar with. We will especially focus on such species, that are not original in the Finnish nature. At the same time we will gather stories, memories, ways of use and travel routes related to these plants. Furthermore we will also examine how we relate to various plants and how they are described in different cultures.
Participation in the workshop does not demand drawing skills; own enthusiasm and interest is enough.
The results of the workshop will produce a polyphonic picture and text archive, which will narrate the relation between man and plants. During the workshop we will also reflect on the concept of origin and if it even is possible to define it today. The material produced in the workshop will be used as a part of the Herbarium (Herbaario) (Vaasa) work of art in the exhibition “Maan ääriin” (To the ends of the World).
The workshop will be held during three days, for three hours at a time. 15 participants can join in. English will be the language used in the workshop.
